SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
Bypass Gástrico
Gastric Bypass Surgery is a surgical procedure that focuses on reducing the size and capacity of the stomach. In addition, a new intestinal connection is made, which allows leaving a portion of the intestine inactive to absorb nutrients. In these two ways the goal of controlled weight loss is achieved.
This procedure offers excellent weight loss and improvement in the diseases of Obesity.

Gastric sleeve
The Gastric Sleeve is a surgical procedure in which approximately 80% of the stomach is removed, reducing its capacity. The part of the stomach that is removed produces a substance Ghrelin, responsible for causing appetite, therefore the portions that you can consume will be small but without feeling hungry.
It is currently the most performed bariatric procedure worldwide due to its safety and effectiveness, achieving weight reduction and control of obesity-like diseases similar to gastric bypass.

Gastric balloon
The intragastric balloon is a sphere made of a soft and harmless material, which is inserted into the stomach and filled with a saline solution (500ml). The balloon inflated and floating in the stomach diminishes the sensation of hunger and gives a sensation of early satiety to the ingestion.
This procedure is performed by endoscopy and people who are eligible achieve weight losses of between 14 and 20 kg.

Bariatric others
Other less common procedures are SADIS, Duodenal Switch and Gastric MiniBypass. The indications for these procedures are very precise and are only recommended in specific cases.
There are other procedures such as plication or gastric corset, which are only recommended as part of research protocols since they are still considered experimental and without conclusive results.
To know if a bariatric procedure is ideal for you, it is necessary for a specialist to assess your case. Call us, we will be happy to assist you.

Minimally invasive surgery
Minimally Invasive Surgery, also called endoscopy or laparoscopy, is a procedure in which the surgeon uses an instrument called an endoscope, which is a long, thin tube with a tiny camera at the end. Instead of making a large incision in the patient, the doctor makes several small incisions (.5 to 1 cm) through which he introduces the specialized instruments to perform the procedure. This requires proper training from your Surgeon.
It has certain advantages such as: shorter hospitalization and recovery time, less post-surgery pain, fewer post-surgery infections, possibility of returning to daily activities in less time and of course less scarring.

Doubts
The most frequent questions of our patients regarding bariatric surgery
It is estimated that you can lose between 60 and 90% of your excess body weight , however this is variable. The procedure carried out properly includes monitoring of a multidisciplinary group that can help you reach the goal of being at your ideal weight.
Obesity is a condition in which multiple factors influence, so it must be addressed by multiple specialists at the same time. The Bariatric Surgeon is responsible for coordinating a group of specialists who will be in charge of your pre-surgical assessment and your post-surgical follow-up. In our team we have Specialists in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Psychology, Nutrition and Anesthesiology, working together to take care of your health.
It is important that you see a Bariatric Surgeon, who is trained to assist you in all aspects of your surgery.
The day of your surgery and one more night, in order to maintain an adequate observation of your evolution, adequate recovery and adequate preparation so that upon discharge you are fully prepared by our team for your daily life.
All this is foreseen for your adequate recovery and success in your surgery.
The same day after your surgery it is recommended that you start walking. The benefit of minimally invasive surgery is present in bariatric procedures so pain will not be a concern. Rest after this type of surgery does not require whole days in bed and you will be able to do your activities without depending on another person.
Returning to your work activities depends on your job and your evolution.
As in any surgery there are risks, and it is very important to explain them to you in detail. The most frequent complications are minor, which means that they do not endanger the life of the patient. It can be about the risk of infection of the surgical wounds in the first place, others that could occur are intestinal ileus (paralysis of the intestine temporarily) or bleeding from somewhere that only requires medical treatment.
The frequency of severe complications is less than 1%. Among them are bleeding that warrants surgical reintervention, stapling line leak, pulmonary thromboembolism, deep vein thrombosis, intestinal obstruction due to internal hernia. The bariatric surgeon is trained to detect these complications early and give them proper management so that they do not put your health at risk.
Belatedly, certain nutritional deficiencies may appear which occur when there is no adherence to nutritional recommendations. By approaching a Bariatric group like ours, you can have the confidence that we know what we are dealing with and are prepared to solve any eventuality.
Dr. Jesús Margarito will continue to review you systematically after you leave the hospital so that you get the best out of your surgery. In addition, you will continue to be cared for by our nutrition team in order to ensure that you can achieve your weight reduction goal without affecting your nutritional status or energy.
If required, you will be treated later by specialists in Endocrinology and Internal Medicine, who are trained to treat the multiple diseases related to Obesity After your surgery, you can count on your surgeon for any emergency at any time.
